Welcome to capitol hill

Worship begins at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday, following a Hospitality Time of treats and beverages at 9:30 a.m. All children are welcome and valued in Worship.

Weekly Worship includes scripture, prayer, music, proclamation, and Communion. The service includes both lay and clergy leadership in being and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Through the week, there are opportunities for Disciples Women Fellowship and Mission Work. Bible Studies are sometimes offered on Fridays. We sponsor “Trunk or Treat” each October for the entire neighborhood.

We are committed to missions locally and beyond. The fourth Sunday of each month we collect money and food for the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry. We support the ministry of our Regional campground at the Christian Conference Center, Newton, Iowa, with our offerings and our labor. We share in the annual Hunger Hike each October. We sometimes send mission teams to Rippling Hope Ministries in Detroit, Michigan and have sent mission teams to Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries, Los Fresnos, Texas.

Various neighborhood groups also meet in our building each month. These include Narcotics Anonymous, Fairmont Park Neighborhood Association, an Art Class and sometimes Mothers of Multiples.

Four additional congregations nest in our building: Morning Star Baptist Church, Christian Pentecostal, Jesus Is the Way Church, and Restoring the Kingdom. Each one utilizes the building to the glory of God, carrying out its mission in the name of Jesus Christ. We have been blessed through these rich and culturally diverse relationships.

We invite you to visit us, where we can meet you personally and extend hospitality. The church’s phone number is 515-266-6283. We would be happy to talk and walk with you on your Christian journey.

Discover Our Vibrant Origins Rooted in Holy Scripture

Our historical roots stretch back to the early nineteenth century, founded upon a vision of total unity. We moved beyond historical denominational disagreements to establish a united congregation modeled purely on scripture. Today, we continue to uphold these historical traditions while steadily growing in racial and ethnic diversity. We firmly believe that all individuals are children of God, and our congregation reflects that heavenly truth through mutual respect, continuous study, and unyielding grace.

Leaving behind a self-centered life marks the triumphant start of an entirely new existence grounded in trust. We practice baptism by immersion to visually represent this profound spiritual cleansing and rebirth. While this remains our primary tradition, our Christian Church deeply honors and respects alternative baptismal practices from other traditions. We celebrate every soul who decides to dedicate their life to God, completely supporting them as they walk forward in faith and endless grace.

  • Where can I find a welcoming christian church in Des Moines?

If you are searching for a welcoming community of faith, our congregation offers a vibrant and inclusive space. We believe that all persons are children of God, and we celebrate diversity in our race, ethnicity, and opinions. In our weekly worship services, we practice open communion, which means the Lord's Supper is open to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, regardless of background. Our congregation is completely self-governing, and we encourage open discussion, study, and prayer. • Who is allowed to receive communion in a Disciples of Christ church?

In our tradition, we practice open communion during every weekly worship service. We believe the Lord’s Supper belongs to Christ, not to any specific denomination, so we invite all who believe in Jesus Christ to participate. You do not need to be a member of our congregation or hold specific theological views to share in this sacred meal. The red chalice, which serves as our symbol, represents the central role of communion in our worship. It is a weekly opportunity for all of us to experience God's grace and renew our commitment to loving and serving others.

  • What are the beliefs and practices regarding baptism in the Disciples of Christ?

We practice baptism by immersion, symbolizing the moment when the old self-centered life is set aside and a new life of trust in God begins. However, we also deeply honor and recognize other baptismal traditions, meaning you do not need to be re-baptized to join our fellowship. For us, baptism represents a public commitment to follow Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit, scripture, and personal conscience. We believe that through this sacred act, believers are initiated into the oneness of the church, uniting us with Christians everywhere in common witness, spiritual growth, and loving service.

  • What is the role of lay leadership in your worship services?

We believe firmly in the ministry of all believers, meaning that both ordained ministers and laypersons share leadership in our worship, service, and spiritual growth. Our congregation is entirely self-governing, allowing us to call our own pastor and direct our own programs. During our formal or informal worship services, you will see lay women and men actively leading prayers, reading scripture, and serving communion. We do not restrict leadership based on gender or clerical status. Every person is encouraged to use their unique gifts to serve God and support our spiritual community.

  • How does your congregation handle different viewpoints and theological opinions?

We celebrate freedom of belief and welcome a rich diversity of opinion within our church family. We am called together around one essential of faith: belief in Jesus Christ as Savior. Beyond that, we believe persons are free to follow their own consciences, guided by prayer, scripture, study, and the Holy Spirit. We do not demand conformity or adherence to strict creeds; instead, we expect our members to extend the same freedom of belief to others. Open, honest discussion of difficult issues is encouraged, helping us grow together in mutual respect and love.
